Once a crop has a viral infection there are no management strategies available to mitigate yield loss. New and emerging tools and technologies offer potential opportunities for the future effective and sustainable management of viruses and their insect vectors. To address these challenges, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has invested $10.2 million in a suite of targeted research programs to provide strategies for effective virus management in grain crops by quantifying and promoting the hidden impact of viruses across Australia and providing growers with management strategies to mitigate yield loss. GRDC now requires an independent technical review of this program of research. The review will evaluate methodologies, collaboration, IP and capacity management, delivery to next users, global research trends and ultimately, impact for growers. It will also provide recommendations for capturing transformational opportunities, leveraging international networks, and maintaining freedom to operate. Importantly, the review will assess the national impact of these investments on virus management and guide future directions for GRDC’s investment strategy.
