The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is seeking to invest in a major national investment to accelerate oat adaptation for Australian production systems. This initiative will integrate genetics, agronomy, and modelling to advance understanding of oat phenology, to help growers avoid frost, heat, and drought. Building on the success of the CSP2007-002RTX project, this new program will expand multi-year, multi-location field trials across WA, SA, VIC, and NSW, delivering validated genetic markers, APSIM modelling parameters, and novel genetic diversity to fast-track the development of high-performing oat cultivars. The project aims to provide breeders with cutting-edge tools and resources, including a comprehensive database of phenological genes and alleles, new unique germplasm via targeted mutagenesis, and refined predictive models for flowering and adaptation. Outputs will also include an industry-standard oat developmental scale, a phenology classification system, and region-specific sowing recommendations; empowering growers with practical, data-driven decision support for improved yield stability and profitability. GRDC is seeking proposals from multi-disciplinary teams with expertise in genetics, breeding, agronomy, and modelling, and encourages consortium approaches. Significant co-investment is sought to maximise the scale, impact, and value for money of the research, ensuring that project outcomes are robust, widely adopted, and directly benefit the Australian grains industry.
